Using the Wireless Microphone

The Sony DCR-TRV17 has a microphone built into the camera. A Sony Wireless microphone, with a transmission range of up to 150 feet, is also supplied which may give better audio than the built-in microphone. This page describes how to use the wireless microphone.

The wireless microphone consists of two units: a receiver which connects to the camera and a transmitter which has the microphone and can be worn by the person being filmed. Each unit requires one AA battery. There is also an earpiece which can be connected to the receiver for monitoring the sound.

Connecting the Receiver to the Camera

Open the plastic cover on the side of the camera to expose the connection ports.

Plug the receiver into the red port labeled MIC.

You can clip the receiver onto the camera strap or handle to keep it secured near the camera.

Placing the Transmitter

The transmitter can be placed somewhere near the person or people being filmed, such as on a desk or table, or it can be clipped to a person. The receiver and transmitter can be up to 150 feet away from each other, depending on conditions.

Turning on the Wireless Microphone

Set the power switch on both the transmitter and the receiver to ON. Be sure that the RF Channel switch is set to the same channel on both transmitter and receiver. The green RF Channel light on the receiver will come on when you are getting a good signal. If there is noise on the line, experiment with using one of the other two RF channels, by setting both the transmitter and receiver to another channel.

Monitoring Sound

You can plug the earpiece provided into the receiver to monitor the sound. A standard set of headphones, such as the ones that come with portable cd players, can be used instead of the earpiece, though sound will only be sent to one side of the headphones.
