Once you have recorded your digital video, you will most likely want to edit it before creating your movie in final format (quicktime, DVD, VHS, etc). To do this, you will need to transfer the video from the digital video camera to the computer. You can use iMovie to transfer the video to the computer, and then edit your video right in iMovie.
When working with the camera at the computer it is recommended that you connect the AC Power adapter.
You use a Firewire cable to connect the digital video camera to the computer. The Macs in Murray 114 and Murray 116 should already have a firewire cable connected. Locate the free end of the cable.

Open the plastic cover on the side of the camera to expose the connection ports.

Plug the small end of the Firewire cable into the port labelled DV IN/OUT.

Turn the Power switch on the camera to VCR while pressing the small green button (A).

Launch iMovie by clicking the iMovie icon
on
the dock or in the applictions folder. If iMovie opens with an existing
project, click File > New Project... on the iMovie
menu to start a new project.

If necessary, click on the Camera icon side of the Camera/edit slider so that the Camera Connected screen is displayed.

Use the controls shown in the image above to control playback from the camera. When you see the portion of your video that you want to import, click Import. Your imported video clip will appear on the iMovie shelf. Click Import again to stop importing video.

Be careful to only import the video you wish to use in the final movie. Importing all the video from your tape can quickly fill up even a very large hard drive! While working on your iMovie project, you can keep track of available free space on your hard drive by checking the indicator at the lower right of the iMovie window.
Once you have imported the video you need for your project, use iMovie to edit the video, add transitions, titles, effects, audio, chapter markers, etc. A list of resources to help with using iMovie is available.
