Printing to a Public Printer from Windows 2000

Follow these instructions to set up a printer for use when connected to the wired network in Pelletier using an ethernet cable. If you are connected using the wireless network in Pelletier or Gator's Den (Caflish 24/7 lab) please use these instructions for printing.

Before beginning locate the printer you wish to use. In Pelletier Library, the printers with the red labels (one on each floor) are available for printing from student laptops. Note the Printer Name, Printer IP and Printer Model, displayed on a label on the printer. You will need to enter this information when setting up the printer. Note: Printer information will differ from that shown below.

If this is the first time you have printed to this printer you will need to add the printer to your list of available printers. The instructions below will guide you through the process. You will only need to do this once for each printer you wish to use. If you have printed to this printer before, simply connect your computer to the network and follow the printing instructions.

To add a new printer, connect your computer to the network and click Start > Settings > Printers.

Double-click Add printer.

The Add Printer Wizard will open. Click Next.

Select Local printer, and be sure the box under this selection is not checked. Even though the printer will not be physically attached to your computer, this is the correct option. Trust us. Click Next.

Select Create a new port and select Standard TCP/IP Port from the Type of port drop-down. Click Next.

The Add Standard TCP/IP Printer Port Wizard will open. Click Next.

Enter the Printer IP that you noted from the label on the printer in the Printer Name or IP address box (Printer IP will differ from that shown below). The Port Name box will automatically fill in with a name based on the IP address you enter. Click Next.

A confirmation screen will appear indicating that the wizard was able to locate the printer. Click Finish. Note: If you get a message that the IP address could not be found, check that you are connected to the network, that you noted the correct IP address from the printer and that the printer is turned on.

Choose HP for the manufacturer in the Add Printer Wizard and scroll through the right column to select the printer model you noted from the label on the printer (Printer Model may differ from that shown below). Click Next.

Enter the Printer Name you noted from the label on the printer in the Printer name box. Select No to the question asking if you want to use this printer as the default printer, unless this is the only printer you ever use. Click Next.

Select Do not share this printer and click Next.

You may want to print a test page to confirm that the printer is properly installed, though it is not required. Click Next.

Check the settings on the confirmation screen and click Finish to complete the installation.

To print to this printer, open any application and select File > Print... Use the drop-down list to select the printer with the name you noted from the printer label (or click on the printer icon with this name, depending on your application) and click Print.
