Printing to a Public Printer from Mac OS 10.5 (Leopard)

Before beginning locate the printer you wish to use. In Pelletier Library, the printers with the red labels (one on each floor) are available for printing from student laptops. Note the Printer Name, Printer IP and Printer Model, displayed on a label on the printer. You will need to enter this information when setting up the printer. Note: Printer information will differ from that shown below.

If this is the first time you have printed to this printer you will need to add the printer to your list of available printers. The instructions below will guide you through the process. You will only need to do this once for each printer you wish to use. If you have printed to this printer before, simply connect your computer to the network and follow the printing instructions.

To add a new printer, connect your computer to the network and open System Preferences from the Apple menu.Click Print & Fax.

Click the + sign at the bottom of the Printers list.

Select IP from the toolbar. Select HP Jet Direct - Socket for the Protocol drop-down. Enter the Printer IP that you noted from the label on the printer or the table above in the Address box (Printer IP may differ from that shown below). Replace the value in the Name box with one that makes sense to you, and fill in the Location box, if desired. Choose Select a driver to use... from the Print Using drop-down and in the list below that select the printer model you noted from the label on the printer or the table above(Printer Model may differ from that shown below). Click Add.

If the Installable Options window displays, click Continue without checking any boxes.

The printer you just added will automatically become the default printer for your computer (indicated by its listing in bold). Most likely, you will want to change this. Do so by selecting your preferred default printer from the Default Printer drop-down on the Print & Fax pane of System Preferences.

To print to this printer, open any application and select File > Print... Use the drop-down Printer list to select the printer with the name you gave the printer and click Print.
