Your Allegheny Account

Every student and employee is given space on a network server to store files. Student accounts are limited to 10 MB and email spools are limited to 3 MB. Students can check the size of their accounts and email spools online.

Accounts are backed up daily, so files stored there can be recovered should they be lost or damaged.WS_FTP Pro is provided on all lab and employee machines for use in backing up files to your account.

Your username and password are used to ftp to your account, check email, and access a personal web account. See the links below for futher information.

Your network account will remain active during the time you are employed or are an active student at Allegheny. Employee accounts will be removed upon seperation from the college. Student accounts will be purged on August 1st following graduation. If a student leaves the college before graduation their network account will be removed when we are notified by the Admissions office. You should download any files that are stored on the FTP server to a personal computer. You may want to consider burning the files to a CD disk for a more permanent copy.

Username

Your username is determined as follows:

Students: Usernames for student accounts are generally set to be the first 6 letters of your last name followed by the first initial of your first name. For example, John Smith may have smithj for a username and John Smithwick might have smithwj for a username.

In some cases there may be an instance of a username with a duplcate last name and first initial so your username may contain a number at the end, for example Jay Smith might have smithj2 for a username, since John Smith is already using smithj.

Employees: Usernames for employee accounts are generally set to be the first initial of your first name followed by the first seven letters of your last name. For example, Jane Smith may have jsmith for a username and Jane Smithwick might have jsmithwi for a username.

Email Address

Students: Student email addresses are set to be their username followed by @allegheny.edu. For instance, John Smith, with username smithj, has email address smithj@allegheny.edu

Employees: Employee default email addresses are set to be their username followed by @allegheny.edu. For instance, Jane Smith, with username jsmith, has default email address jsmith@allegheny.edu. For convenience, employees may also use their fullname email address, which is based on their full first name and full last name separated by a dot. For example, Jane Smith may use the optional fullname email address jane.smith@allegheny.edu. See this tutorial for more information about the fullname email address.

Email/FTP Password

Your password is used to check email and to ftp to your account, to log on to your desktop computer, and is initially set for you. This default password is issued on a temporary basis and should be changed at the earliest opportunity.

Student password: Your password is initially set to be your first and last initials, followed by the # sign, followed by your student ID number, without leading zeros. For example, John Smith with student ID# 0657898 would have a password set to js#657898.

Employee password: If you have not been given your initial email/ftp password, please stop by the Help Desk in Murray Hall for assistance.

A web form is available to allow you to easily change your network password. If you have not yet done so, please change your password right now!
