Creating and Using Categories

Creating Categories

1. Click on the 'Categories' link in the left side menu to open the 'Categories' page.

2. The 'Create new top level category' link to start adding categories.

2a. There are no limitations in naming a category but it is recommended that you are brief and use only letters and numbers to name your category.

2b. When you create a new category you will be prompted to 'rebuild my site' (the yellow message box in the image below). Save yourself time by adding all new categories before rebuilding your site.

3. Create sub-categories by clicking the 'Create' link inside the category table.

3a. There are no limitations in naming a sub-category but it is recommended that you are brief and use only letters and numbers to name your sub-category.

3b. When you create a new sub-category you will be prompted to 'rebuild my site' (the yellow message box in the image below). Save yourself time by adding all new sub-categories before rebuilding your site.


Category-based archives

1. By default, Movable Type archives your entries by month. However, you can change these settings so that Movable Type archives your entries by category. To do this click on the Web Config Button on the left-side menu.

2. Click on the 'Publishing' link towards the upper-right of the page:

3. On this page you can change several preferences for how Movable Type will archive your data. Start scrolling to the 'Publishing Preferences' section to identify the default type of archive. It is recommended that one uses 'category' or 'individual' as that typically makes it easier to find content.

4. Once you have selected the 'Preferred Archive Type' scroll down the page a little further and make sure that you have selected that your archives are mapped. When you map your archive types Movable Type will organize and archive your posts based on the archive type and file location identified in this section. You must minimally map an archive for the prefered archive type selected in the previous step.

5. Once you have completed your changes click 'Save Changes' and the page will reload with a notice to rebuild your site. Click 'Rebuild my site' to make your changes public.

6. You will be prompted through a pop-up window to rebuild your files. Click 'Rebuild', the time it takes to rebuild your site will vary please be patience and allow Movable Type to complete the task before closing your browser window.
