Banners allow you to label an entire day with a title without interfering with the schedule listing for that day. A common use would be if there is an all-day event that you plan to be involved in, but that you don't intend to devote your entire day to.
To create a new banner, choose the File menu, and "New Banner" or click and drag an area at the top of the column for the day in which you want to place the banner. Just like a meeting, you have the option of titling the banner, or double-clicking to enter more details.

Once you reach the banner details window by double-clicking, the options look nearly identical to those for an activity/meeting, except that you can not invite guests to a banner notice.
