Read Allegheny Email from Home Using Eudora

Allegheny Webmail is available off-campus for reading your Allegheny email using a web browser. If you prefer to use an email program to read your Allegheny email on your home computer, we recommend that you download and configure Eudora. Eudora is available in paid, sponsored, and light modes, with the sponsored and light modes being free. You can download it from the Eudora website.

Once downloaded, double-click the file icon to install. When you have finished the installation, open Eudora. The New Account Wizard will open. Click Next and select Create a brand new email account. Click Next.

Enter your name, Allegheny email address and username (for example, smithj) on the next three screens. Use the chart below to determine the correct value to enter for Incoming Server on the Incoming Email Server. Be sure POP is selected in the lower portion of the screen. Click Next.

  Incoming Server
Students smailin.allegheny.edu
Employees emailin.allegheny.edu

On the Outgoing Email Server screen enter the Outgoing (SMTP) email server of your Internet Service Provider (for example, mail.alltel.net if you are using the Allegheny/Alltel Internet Service or mail.zbzoom.net if you are using Armstrong Zoom Cable Internet; students on Gatornet should enter smailout.allegheny.edu). Click Next.

Click Finish. Before checking for new mail for the first time, click Tools > Options on the Eudora menu. Click the Incoming Mail icon and check the boxes Leave mail on server and Delete from server when emptied from Trash. If this is the main computer you use to check your Allegheny email (for instance, you are a student), you should also check the Delete from server after box and enter a number (2 is suggested) in the day(s) box. Click OK.

Eudora will install by default in the sponsored mode. It will have all the features available in your office and in the labs, but will have ads. If you would like to change to either the light (free, no ads, fewer features) or paid (full featured, no ads) mode click Help > Payment & Registration on the Eudora menu. Select your preferred mode and follow the on-screen instructions.

For further information about using Eudora Pro, please see the full list of Eudora tutorials.
