Using a Card Reader to Download Images from a Digital Camera

You can use a card reader to obtain the images from your digital camera without the need to connect your camera to the computer or install special camera software.

LaCie card readers are available on two computers in Murray 116. These card readers will read the following types of media from digital still and video cameras:

To use the card reader, first remove the media from the camera (see camera manual for instructions) and insert the media into the card reader in the appropriate slot. Note that a green light will light up to indicate that the reader has recognized your media card.

To access the images on the card, double-click on My Computer and then double-click on the drive associated with your media type. Use the chart to determine the drive to open:

Browse the drive until you find the folder with the images, which typically have filenames ending with .jpg.

You can double-click to open an image from here or drag any images you wish to open into a folder on the hard drive. You can also ftp your files to your account directly from the card reader. To do this, open WS_FTP and connect to your account (see WS_FTP tutorial if you need help doing this). In the Local System window, scroll down until you see the drive letter associated with your media card (look in My Computer to determine the correct drive letter) and double-click on it.

Browse until you have opened the folder with the images, select the image(s) you wish to send to your account, and click the right-pointing arrow to send the image(s) directly from the card reader to your account.

When you have finished using the card reader you MUST eject the card before removing it from the card reader. Failure to eject before removing your card may cause damage to the data on your card! To eject, open My Computer and right-click on the appropriate drive. Select Eject.

The green light will turn off on the card reader, indicating that it is now safe to remove your card.
