Creating an Auto-reply E-mail Message in Eudora Pro

To have an auto-reply e-mail message in Eudora Pro you must:

Creating Stationery in Eudora Pro

Click the New Message button on the Eudora Pro toolbar to open a blank message window. Leave the To: area blank. Type your reply message in the message area, and if desired enter a subject.

When you have finished creating the message, click File > Save as Stationery on the Eudora Pro menu.

Save the stationery to C:\Home\Main\My Documents\Mail\Stationery\ on a Windows2000 computer or C:\Home\Main\Mail\Stationery\ on a Windows NT computer and close Eudora. (Note: you must close and reopen Eudora before you can use the stationery you just created for your auto-reply filter.)

To edit stationery: If you need to edit your saved stationery at some future point, choose Tools > Stationery to open the Stationery window and double-click on your stationery to open a message window with the stationery text. Make your changes and then save using File > Save as Stationery.

Creating an Auto-Reply Filter

Launch Eudora if it is not already open. On the Eudora toolbar, click Tools > Filters. In the window at the left of the Filters window click New to begin creating your auto-reply filter.

To set which messages will get the auto-reply, make sure Incoming is checked in the Match (top portion) of the filter window. Then in the Header drop-down choose either To: or <<Any Recipient>>. Choosing To: will only send the auto-reply to messages sent directly to you, while choosing <<Any Recipient>> will auto-reply messages that have been CC'd or BCC'd to you.

Leave contains selected in the drop-down below Header, and in the box next to contains enter the first six letters of your last name. This will cause the auto-reply filter to be applied to emails addressed to both your default email address and your fullname email address and will prevent the auto-reply from going out to everyone in any LISTSERVs you subscribe to! You may want to use the remaining boxes in the Match section to further refine your matching or you can just leave them alone.

Next, you set the Action of the filter in the bottom half of the Filters window by selecting Reply With from the top Action drop-down. Doing this will create a new box to the right of the Action drop-down. Choose the stationery you just created from this second drop-down. Note: If you do not see the stationery you just created, try closing Eudora and re-opening.

Click File > Save to save the auto-reply filter you just created. Remember to stay logged in to your computer and to leave Eudora open while you are away so that Eudora can check your email and perform the auto-reply.

Stopping an Auto-Reply

When you return to work you need to stop the auto-reply message from going out to all incoming mail. You can do this by deleting the filter, or changing the Match setting.

To delete the filter, select Tools > Filters from the Eudora menu to open the Filters window, highlight the filter you want to delete and click the Remove button. You will need to follow the instructions for creating a filter again the next time you want to have an auto-reply.

If you'd rather not recreate the filter each time you need an auto-reply you can UNcheck the Incoming box in the Match section of the filter window. Save the filter after you have done this. The filter will still be there, but will not go out automatically to all incoming mail.

When you are ready to use this filter again, simply check the Incoming box and save the filter.
