Importing Images from a Digital Camera

The easiest way to transfer images from a digital camera to a computer is to use a Card Reader. Three computers in Murray Hall have card readers attached and can be used to copy images from the digital cameras loaned by the Help Desk to a computer or to your account. Please see the Card Reader tutorial for details.

You can also use software supplied with your camera to import images from the camera to your computer. In this case, the software must first be installed on your computer. The Olympus software required by the Olympus cameras on loan from the Help Desk is already installed on a computer in Room 114, Murray Hall. You may use that computer to retrieve your images from the camera before returning the camera to the Help Desk.

You may also install the software on your personal computer, if you wish to download the images at home before returning the camera. The required software is on the CD that is loaned with the camera. Both Mac and PC versions of the software are available. Should you have a problem with the CD, the software is also available for download from the Olympus web site at http://www.olympusamerica.com/cpg_section/cpg_downloads.asp

1. The white cord with the digital camera must be connected to the computer and the camera. Locate the appropriate port on the back of your tower. The end with the nine prongs will connect to your tower. (Mac users: please use the supplied Mac adapter.)

2. The other end of the white cord will connect into the camera. Attach the white cord into the side of the digital camera. Make sure that the camera is turned ON. If the batteries are low, there is an AC adapter that may also be connected on this same side.

3. If you are using a computer that already has software that allows you to import images (such as Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro, Fireworks, Microsoft Photo Editor, etc.) you may download the images directly into that software. Otherwise, you may use the Olympus Digital Vision Software directly to download the images. If using the Olympus software directly click Start >Programs>Olympus Digital Vision>Olympus.exe to begin the download process. If importing into an image program (such as Photoshop), you typically open that program and then use a command similar to File > Import or File >scan image. Using Photoshop 6, the command is File > Import > Olympus Digital Vision.

4. Once the software is loaded and the window opens, select the photos that you want to download. You may select all of the photos by clicking the button marked Select All at the bottom of the window or you may select just a few photos. Click on an individual picture if you want to select a single photo or press the Shift key and click on multiple photographs to select more than one photo. Once a photo has been selected it is outlined in blue.

5. Once you have selected all of the photos that you will need, click on the Download button at the bottom of the window. Another window appears asking if you would like to download images to a disk or into an Image Window. If you are downloading into a program such as Photoshop, select Image Window and the images will be downloaded and opened directly into that software. If you are downloading using the Olympus Digital Camera software, download pictures to Disk and the images will be downloaded and saved onto your computer.

6. Wait while your photos are downloaded. A progress window will appear showing which photo is currently being downloaded and the percentage downloaded this far.

7. Once all of your photos are downloaded, erase the photos from the digital camera. Make sure that you have acquired ALL of the photos that you will need. Once they are erased from the camera they are NOT retrievable. Click on the Select All button and then click on the Erase button. The Olympus Digital Vision window will no longer contain any thumbnails of the photos.

8. Close the Digital Olympus Vision Window. Your photos are now in an image window or stored on your computer. Make sure to Save your photos if you did not download directly to your computer (disk). If you are using the Murray lab computer remember to WS-FTP your images to your account BEFORE you log off the computer.
