Originally posted on April 29, 2008Senior Network Accounts Will Be RemovedAttention Graduating Seniors! All 2008 graduates will have their network and email accounts purged on August 1st, 2008. It is recommended that you make a copy of your network files before leaving campus. Once the accounts are removed, your Allegheny email address will no longer be available and you will no longer have access to your network files. After 8/1/2008 the network files on hercules will be removed from the system to make room for incoming students. Your Allegheny email address and personal web pages will also be removed along with the network account. The email and network files are available now and will continue to be available until August 1st for access whether you are on campus or off. Use an FTP program to download your files to your personal computer. You may want to copy them to a CD-R so you have a permanent copy. Once your files are burned to a CD they are easily transported and stored. The User Services web site has instructions for using FTP to download your files. Phil Reinhart Originally posted on April 21, 2008Don't Forget to Backup Your Data.A friendly reminder to backup your files using FTP. The best way to minimize the disruptions of computer failure is by having recent and well organized back up of your data on the ftp server. Steps for backing up your data are available online with extra assistance available from User Services by calling (ext. 2755) or emailing (computing@allegheny.edu).

Originally posted on March 24, 2008A Few Notes From Spring BreakA few notes for you returning to campus after spring break. The scheduled power outage occurred without any serious side effects. User Services has checked the labs and teaching spaces over the break for to head off problems before classes resumed this morning. If you experience problems with classroom technology please report to Computing Services by email (computing@allegheny.edu)or phone (ext 2755). Computing Services is in the final stages of a project that will clean out unused computer and network accounts. Faculty, staff, and administrators will receive information by email early this week about the accounts for which they are responsible. The email will provide more details on the project and a link to web form where the user can identify the accounts they continue to need and the ones that can be removed. Computing Services is now on Facebook. Our page is automatically updated with the Computing Services News and Notes feed. The page was started to provide another avenue for communication between Computing Services staff members and the campus community. Technical problems should continue to be directed to User Services. Welcome back. Originally posted on March 14, 2008Reminder To Shut Down Computer This AfternoonJust another reminder to back up your data and shut down your computer before you leave work this afternoon. While it is always a good idea to back up data at least weekly it is even more strongly encouraged today as the power is scheduled to be out over the weekend. Please be sure to include the departmental computers in your area in this process. Originally posted on March 11, 2008Reminder of Scheduled Power OutageThe majority of campus will be without electric power starting Saturday, March 15, 2008. The power outage is necessary to upgrade the underground power distribution to include the Vukovich Center for Communication Arts. Computing Services requests that faculty, staff and administrators turn off their computers as they leave work on March 14, 2008. We also recommend that users take this opportunity to back up their files using FTP as a safe guard.
