Home > GatorNet > Configure Your System > Windows 95/98/ME

Step 1 - Installing Ethernet Network Card Drivers:

The Ethernet network card that is needed for GatorNet access also needs to have special software drivers in order to communicate over the Internet. If your computer came with a network card installed, the drivers may already be installed. To find out if the drivers are installed:

Click on the Start button, select Settings and then select Control Panel. When the Control Panel window opens find the Network icon and double-click it. When the Network window opens look under the Configuration tab for your Ethernet card in the list. If your Ethernet card is listed then you have the necessary drivers installed and you can proceed to Step 2 - Installing the TCP/IP Protocol.

If you do not see your network card listed then you must first install the network card according to the manufacturer's directions. Remember to turn off your computer before installing the network card. The manufacturer's directions may also tell you how to install the necessary drivers for the network card. Follow the manufacturer's instructions to install the network card and then proceed to Step 2 - Installing the TCP/IP Protocol.

Step 2 - Installing the TCP/IP Protocol:
  1. In the Network window look for TCP/IP in the list. If it is listed you can proceed to Step 3 - Configuring TCP/IP Properties.
  1. If TCP/IP is not listed then click on the Add button in the Network window then double-click on Protocol.
  1. Select the manufacturer Microsoft from the list that appears on the left and then choose TCP/IP from the list on the right. Click on OK.

Step 3 - Configuring TCP/IP Properties:
  1. Once you are back to the Network window click on TCP/IP and then click on the Properties button. If there is more than one TCP/IP select the one that has the name of your Ethernet network card after it.
  2. Click on the IP Address tab and make sure the circle next to Obtain an IP address automatically is filled in.
  3. Click on the DNS Configuration tab and make sure the circle next to Disable DNS is filled in.
  4. Click on the WINS Configuration tab and make sure the circle next to Use DHCP for WINS Resolution is filled in.
  5. Click on OK in the TCP/IP Properties window then click on OK in the Network window. When you are asked if you want to restart your computer click on Yes.
  6. You are now ready to Locate Your Data Jack.
