Allegheny College Antivirus Software Requirement

** IMPORTANT INFORMATION - Make it easier on yourself and read this page before proceeding.

If you are reading this and just registered your computer you must wait 5 minutes before continuing. In 5 minutes you will have full access to the network and you will be able to continue to the Trendmicro antivirus install. While you're waiting you have time to read the rest of the information on this page.

You must have the Allegheny Trend Micro OfficeScan installed on your computer in order to use our network. (This only applies to computers running the Windows operating systems. See below for Mac, Linux, and other OS) Trend Micro OfficeScan is provided free by Allegheny College.

Allegheny does not provide antivirus software for Mac, Linux, or other operating systems.

You DO NOT need to install the antivirus software if one of the following applies to you. This is because the software is already installed on those laptops.

• You purchased one of the laptop deals from Computer Showcase for the Fall 2007 semester and the software was installed by them.
• You purchased one of the laptop deals from Computer Showcase for the Fall 2007 semester and you had it delivered to your home but brought it to Murray Hall to have the Allegheny image put on it.

You DO need to install the antivirus software if you did not purchase a computer from Computer Showcase or if you had a Computer Showcase computer shipped directly to you. You will need to download the Trend Micro av software.

All Windows PC users MUST complete the free download unless it was pre-installed by Computer Showcase. As stated in the "Student Virus Policy" all student owned computers that are connected to the College network must have the free Trend Micro OfficeScan software provided by Allegheny College installed on them.

First offense
If a student computer is detected as virus infected, the student will be notified and Computing Services will disconnect this computer from the network. It will not be reconnected to the network until the computer is "cleaned" of all viruses. The student will also receive a one week network suspension.

Second Offense
If a second offence occurs and another cleaning is required, the computer will not be reconnected to the network for a period of two weeks after it is cleaned.

Third offense
If a third offense occurs, the computer will not be reconnected to the network for the remainder of the current semester.


If you currently have antivirus software installed on your computer you must uninstall the software you are using before installing Trend Micro OfficeScan from Allegheny College. You can do this by following the outlined procedure below.

How to uninstall your own antivirus software

• First, save this page to your Favorites or Bookmark in your web browser (in case you need to restart your computer after uninstalling your product).
• Next, click on Start => Settings => Control Panel => Add/Remove Programs.
• Look through the list for your antivirus software, select it, then click on the Remove button.
• After the uninstall process completes you will need to restart your computer. Please restart your computer before continuing.
• Next, open this page from your Favorites or Bookmarks or browse to http://help.allegheny.edu/avsoftware.php and click on the Continue button to go to the Trend Micro OfficeScan installation page.
• Follow the on screen prompts. Be sure to click on Yes to accept any Trend Micro Security Warnings if they appear.

Remember, save this page to your Desktop or Favorites (explained above). Restart your computer, and then browse back to this page and click Continue.
